Q.  My road needs to be repaved, who should I contact?
A.  Roadway maintenance is provided by the Bureau of Highways. To contact them you can call 410-887-3560.

Q.  How do I get an Overload Permit to cross County-owned bridges with weight restrictions?
A.  Write to:

Include the address, the number of axles, and gross axle loads, and the distance between axles. Permits may be issued to the owner of the truck only and may or may not be granted, depending on axle loads, spacing, etc. Call 410-887-3764 with any questions. Permits may take two weeks, so allow plenty of time.

Q.  How do I find out the status of bridge projects before construction starts?
A.  Call the Structural Design and Approval Section of the Bureau of Engineering and Construction at 410-887-3737. After construction starts, call the Construction Contracts Administration Division at 410-887-3461.

Q.  Is my road going to be widened or resurfaced?
A.  The Highway Design Section of the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, at 410-887-3739, provides information involving any proposed road widening. The Bureau of Highways at 410-887-3560 provides information involving resurfacing of existing roadways.

Q.  Are there any proposed roads to be contructed in my area?
A.  The Highway Design Section of the Bureau of Engineering and Construction can provide this information for public projects by calling 410-887-3739; however, numerous road improvement projects are associated with development projects.  Please call Developers Engineering at 410-887-3751 for these projects.

Q.  When will a project be completed?
A.  The Highway Design Section of the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, at 410-887-3739, provides dates as to the estimated construction date. After a project is under construction, the Construction Contracts Administration Division at 410-887-3461, controls the construction schedule.

Q.  How can I get sidewalks, curb and/or gutters installed?
A.  Property owners must submit a valid petition (67percent of assessable footage must be represented on the petition) for installation of new work. Petition forms are provided by Metropolitan Finance and Petitions by calling 410-887-3363.

Q.  How can I get my alley repaired?
A.  Property owners must submit a valid petition (51percent of abutting property owners represented on petition) for reconstruction. Petition forms are provided by Metropolitan Finance and Petitions by calling 410-887-3363.

Q.  How much will it cost and what type of financing is available?
A.  Alleys are currently $750. This can be paid in full within 30 days of receiving a bill or applied to the property tax bill over a period of 15 years interest free.

Sidewalk, Curb and Gutter currently run $14 per linear foot for sidewalks, $13.50 per linear foot for curb and gutter and $5.50 per square foot for driveway apron.  This can be applied to your property tax bill over a period of five (5) years interest free.

Q.  How can I get the County to take-over my private road?
A.  Property owners must submit a petition to the County requesting take-over. The County will make a field inspection and prepare a report informing property owners what they must do to bring the road up to County standards before the County would accept the road.  All improvements are at the property owner's expense.

Q.  My street needs sweeping.  Whom should I call?
A.  A schedule has been developed to sweep the streets with curbs and gutters four to five times per year. Due to limited equipment and personnel, it is not possible to sweep streets on a "demand" basis. However, if a major problem is encountered call 410-887-3560 to report the situation. A supervisor or crew chief will evaluate the conditions and determine if a sweeper is available for a non-scheduled job.
