Green Building Program
"Transforming Baltimore County Communities"

The Green Building Program promotes energy and resource efficiency and environmentally friendly building techniques. The program does this by incorporating sustainable design principles within its funding for affordable housing. Sustainable design principles will be used to guide the rehabilitation, renovation and new construction of residential structures.

Green Building:

  • is affordable to maintain
  • produces little or no impact on the environment
  • has low toxicity to humans, animals or botanical life

Green Building Standards

The OCC has partnered with several national programs to provide standards and criteria that will guide how affordable housing projects will be built in Baltimore County. These standards and criteria were designed to address the three major types of housing construction:

These new standards and criteria are being incorporated into the Bid Packets (PDF) and Development Guidelines for all new funding requests.

Pilot Phase

We are currently in the Pilot Phase of implementing these new standards and criteria. During this Phase, we will be working with several developers to see if there are any unforeseen problems or issues that need to be resolved before they become requirements. We anticipate fully implementing these standards and criteria by the end of 2008.

Homeowners Go Green

Our Green Building program is not just for developers. There are many green things that homeowners and renters can do around the house that help you to save energy and add more comfort to the home. There is something for everybody!
